William H. Johnson Wall Calendar: The Smithsonian American Art Museum is home to the largest collection of works by William H. Johnson (1901–1970). One of America's most important African American painters, Johnson is now being recognized as a major figure in twentieth-century American art. William H. Johnson’s childhood in rural South Carolina provided a wellspring of imagery as he began painting the history and spirit of the African American experience. He later relocated to New York where he was influence by the excitement of colorful Harlem life.

His unique style developed in the 1930s and 40s, bringing together his combined interests in modernism and African American culture. His colorful paintings characteristically depict scenes of daily life with great personality. The William H. Johnson 2009 wall calendar features works from the Smithsonian collection, with spacious grids that include international holidays and moon phases.
